The Story
Living on an island for 4,5 years made me feel keenly what it’s like to be surrounded by sea. Sometimes raging, sometimes calm, showing its many different hues and moods in different areas, at different times of day. Full of hidden life, a force of mystery. For me, the sea holds beauty, memories of weekends on the beach, my children close to me playing in the sand. The taste of salt and the sand sifting through my fingers as carelessly as time.
How different the image of the sea is for some of the people whom I’ve met along my journeys through Europe. I am not talking about Europeans here, but about those who were unfortunate to be born in a place where they have no rights, no safety, no work, no future. I have heard stories -firsthand and secondhand- of these souls, braving the sea to get to a better place. Risking their lives, even the lives of their children by getting on a boat that may or may not make it to the other shore. Leaving everything behind, just for this small chance at something of a future. Some of them were lost at sea. Some of them were saved by stubborn locals who stand at the forefront and fight for these lives with compassion and bravery, ignoring the selfishness that throbs at the heart of western society.
Some of them made it to land. Maybe disillusioned at what they found, maybe hopeful. But always waiting, because of those they left behind. ‘And I’m waiting, and I’m waiting, and I’m waiting for those I love’. A newfound hope, mingled with endless longing. A new life with an aftertaste of salt.
That is the story of ‘She of the sea’.
Sara
lyrics
She walked, she walked the street
She walked the street
She walked, she walked the street
With an air of familiarity
And I asked, yes I stopped and I asked
And I asked, are you from around here
She said
I'm from far away
It's been a long time
She walked, she walked the street
She walked the street
She walked, she walked the street
With an air of familiarity
And I asked, yes I stopped and I asked
And I asked, are you from around here
She said
I'm from far away
It's been a long time
I'm from far beyond the sea,
Far beyond the sea
The deep blue sea
And by the sea is how I came
I'm from far beyond the sea,
Far beyond the sea
The deep blue sea
And by the sea is how I came
Far, far away
Far, far away
Far, far away
Far, far away
And I'm waiting and I'm waiting
And I'm waiting for those I love
And I'm waiting and I'm waiting
And I'm waiting for those I love
